Hamnbanan is a vital railway link that facilitates freight transport to and from the Port of Gothenburg — the largest port in the Nordic region, handling approximately 65% of Sweden’s container traffic and 30% of its foreign trade.

To meet growing demand and improve efficiency, the Swedish Transport Administration expanded Hamnbanan from a single-track to a double-track railway. The upgrade significantly increased capacity, allowing more frequent train operations and enabling a shift from road to rail freight transport — reducing emissions and easing road congestion.

A major section of the new tracks was constructed underground, particularly between Eriksberg and Pölsebo. This subterranean development minimized noise for nearby residents and freed up land for future urban development, including new housing.

How We Made an Impact

Challenge: In the final stage of the project, Skanska needed a fast, detailed overview of the completed project and the site to support final evaluations and handover. Traditional ground-based methods like GNSS and total stations, while accurate, would have required significant time and manual effort. With deadlines approaching, a quicker, full-surface documentation method was needed to support final evaluations, handover, and mass calculations—without compromising on precision.

Solution: Nordrone used drone-based surveying to capture high-resolution orthophotos, Digital Surface Models (DSM), and 3D surface models. This provided Skanska with an up-to-date, accurate view of the completed project, offering critical insights for final evaluations and efficient handover.
